Design Competitions

Competitive design processes, where architecture firms submit competing visions for a development, are becoming a more common feature of the design and procurement process of NSW developments. Increasingly, councils are using competitive design competitions or processes to achieve design excellence, and sometimes will attach development bonuses to encourage developers to follow the process.

While a competitive design process can seem daunting, and have the potential to add time at the front end of a development, if done well the rewards are worthwhile, as demonstrated by the increased market value, yield, and quality design outcomes achieved in many developments around Sydney and NSW.

JBA has assisted a number of clients in undertaking design competitions. We can assist with:

  • Competition Briefs. Preparation of written competition brief for issue to competing architects, to meet Council requirements.
  • Competition Management. Project management of the design competition process to ensure rigour, independence and transparency in the process.
  • Jury Member / Selection Panel Representative. JBA has senior staff experienced in planning and urban design to assist in the decision making process for the competition.
  • Design Alternatives Report. Preparation of the written report outlining the reason for the winning design, also to meet the formal requirements of Council.
